Widethroat monkeyflower (Diplacus brevipes)

Price

$8.00

Diplacus brevipes is a diminutive monkeyflower native to Southern and Baja California. It thrives in areas recently cleared by wildfires and is exceptionally drought tolerant. This annual can be planted in drifts in sunny areas of the garden.

Like other members of the diplacus genus, brevipes makes an excellent addition to xeriscapes or hotter, drier, baked areas of the garden. Its sticky leaves deter insects and foragers, including deer(!), and when broken or warmed have a pungent, herbal fragrance.

Brevipes flowers mid-May to September and the bright yellow flowers attract an abundance of pollinators, including hummingbirds.

Brevipes can be planted directly into the garden or landscape, or potted in a large patio container with sharp draining soil (such as succulent potting mix). If planting in clay soil, create a mound first in order to facilitate drainage and prevent the plant from sitting in permanently wet soil.
