Western columbine (Aquilegia formosa)

Western columbine is a dainty, woodland plant native to much of western North America, including Oregon. It can be found in a range of habitats, from coniferous forests to oak woodlands. It prefers damp shade and frequently grows alongside streams and springs. 

The low-growing plant exhibits dark green, lobed leaves and spurred red sepals surrounding small, yellow petals. Because of the bright red or orange flower, it gives a nice pop of color to the shade garden.

Aquilegia prefers damp shady areas of the garden and grows quite well in containers or pots. Like other red flowers, aquilegia is a hummingbird magnet and also supports a range of beneficial insects. It likes consistent moisture and
