Sweet gale (Myrica gale)
$35.00
Myrica gale is a beautiful broadleaf, deciduous shrub. Native to the coastal Western US, Myrica gale thrives in coast environments, as well as boggy, acidic clay (perfect for the Willamette Valley!).
It is reminiscent of our native willows, but more compact and much less apt to take over. The grayish leaves have a sweet, resinous scent and have been used historically for medicinal purposes. It is a nitrogen fixer and provides shelter and food for pollinating insects. The bright yellow catkins in spring, and its yellow, architectural stems in winter, offer year-round interest.
A truly under appreciated and fabulous plant!
