Iris tenax, or Oregon iris, is a Willamette Valley native and thrives in variable conditions. It spreads slowly via rhizomes and when not in flower looks like a short bunchgrass. The low mounds of hardy foliage are topped with beautiful, brightly colored purple flowers from April-May. While the flowers are typically a vibrant purple, flowers can range from creamy yellow, to pink and lavender shades. 

Will go dormant in dry and hot summers and retreat underground. 

Can be kept green in summer, but be cautious not to overwater it so as to prevent root rot.
