Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria)
$14.00
Japanese Indigo is a popular plant that has been grown for its natural dyeing properties for thousands of years. Its leaves produce a deep blue to light green color, depending on the treatment. The leaves may be used fresh, without chemicals or mordants, making indigo a great option for beginners.
Growing indigo is relatively easy. It is a semi-tropical plant and so requires rich, damp soil and warm weather. It is also very susceptible to cold - if the frost so much as looks askance at indigo, the leaves die back immediately.
It is a great plant for pots and the stems can be cut back repeatedly each season for multiple flushes. Indigo does not seem to be bothered by disease or pests. The leaves do sunburn in high UV environments, so consider part afternoon shade in summer.
