Douglas spiraea (Spiraea douglasii)
$16.00
Douglas spiraea is a shrub native to western US from Alaska to Northern California. It grows up to 6 feet tall and spreads by rhizomes. In ideal conditions, it can form dense stands and can quickly become the dominant species in wetland habitats.
In less than ideal conditions (ie drier soils) it can be contained and is less apt to spread rapidly.
Douglas spireaea is covered in glossy leaves in spring-fall and bright pink plumes of flowers in spring. It prefers damp conditions and full sun; it does very well in wetlands and boggy soils.
If it is allowed to dry out during the summer, the plant will lose its leaves and go dormant.
Because it tends to spread aggressively, Doug spiraea does best where it has space to grow. Because of its extensive root system, it makes a great wetland restoration plant and acts to prevent soil erosion.
