*Not invasive and not aggressive!*  This is a western native thistle!

Cobwebby thistles are true stunners. With their gray, hairy foliage and bright fuchsia colored flowers, they are an amazing addition to any garden.

Cobwebby thistles are native to Southern Oregon and California. They have been documented in southeastern Lane County, which is likely their northernmost extent. They are incredibly heat and drought tolerant, though they also thrive in damp, cooler conditions as long as they are provided with sharp drainage.

They are often biennial (blooming the second year and then dying), though mine have lived and bloomed for 3+ years. Like other thistles, they have a deep taproot and so do well in the ground or in a deep pot with succulent potting mix. Though they are drought adapted, they look their best with intermittent summer watering.

Native thistles are a significant resource for native insects and birds. Butterfly species that use native thistles as a larval host include: Painted lady (Vanessa cardui), Mylitta crescent (Phyciodes mylitta), and the California crescent (Phyciodes orseis). Hummingbirds are also drawn to thistle nectar. Thistle seeds are an important resource in fall for goldfinches.
