Coastal strawberry (Fragaria chiloensis)
$4.00
One of my favorite plants of all time, coastal strawberries are amazing. They are native to the west coast and can be found along the sandy dunes, thus they tolerate wind, rain, and poor soil very well. They are also perfectly content in wet, heavy clay. They like shade, full sun, wet soil, or dry, cracked soil. It really doesn't matter to these plants- they do it all!
Coastal strawberries are great for urban environments and their lovely dark leaves and tendency to form dense mats make them an excellent alternative to traditional lawns. You can walk on them, cut them back with a weed trimmer, and they will look just as excellent.
In spring through summer they form lovely white blossoms, followed by tiny red strawberries that are enjoyed by birds and small rodents.
Because of their gregarious nature, and because they spread via stolons, do not plant them where they are not wanted.
