Blue rush, California rush, spreading rush (Juncus patens)
$6.00
This is an awesome, tough, adaptable plant. The leaves are round and gray, while the stems hold clusters of golden seeds in late summer. This is a great architectural plant and one that thrives in a variety of conditions. You will often see blue rushes along roadsides and streams and ponds. They thrive in damp, claggy conditions but are equally happy in direct sun when the ground turns into a dry, cracked, hellscape in summer.
They are excellent at erosion control and are often used in urban environments to filter runoff and rainwater. They are a great addition to the edges of a natural water feature or along the edges of a raingarden. They also do very well in containers and pots.
If the leaves begin to turn brown and crispy, give them a bit of water. Otherwise they will go dormant until the winter rains come.
